Bear’s Ranch, owned and stewarded by the Tomlinson family, is located in the breathtaking mountain landscape of Southwest Colorado near Haviland Lake and Chris Park along the scenic Highway 550 corridor north of Durango. The ranch serves as a gathering place for both local residents and visitors while preserving the natural beauty and historic character of the region.

Surrounded by the dramatic Hermosa Cliffs and the San Juan Mountains, Bear’s Ranch offers a wide range of outdoor experiences including horseback trail rides in the warmer months and traditional winter sleigh rides. Future plans include the development of eight small guest cabins inspired by historic Durango mining camps, creating a unique alpine retreat where visitors can enjoy panoramic mountain views, exceptional stargazing, and convenient access to nearby Lake Haviland for fishing, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Hiking and biking trails from the ranch connect to the historic Rico–Rockwood Animas Wagon Toll Road, an important route from Colorado’s early mining era.

As part of the long-term vision for the property, a 72’ x 54’ barn-style event center and museum will be constructed to house the Tomlinson family’s World War II historical collection. This two-story facility will serve as the future home of the Home of the Brave Museum, honoring the stories and sacrifices of America’s veterans while providing educational programming for youth, families, and visitors to the region. The upper level will feature a distinctive gathering space and viewing deck with sweeping views of the ranch and surrounding San Juan Mountains, offering food, refreshments, and a welcoming place for community events and educational programs.

Through thoughtful stewardship and community partnerships, Bear’s Ranch aims to create a place where history, landscape, and community come together to honor the American story.
